What does research say about the efficacy of Neurofeedback?

The use of neurofeedback has become one of the most popular and groundbreaking approaches in the mental health field. Neurofeedback has been around for decades, but it is only recently that research has reinforced its efficacy as a powerful tool to support mental health challenges and help people live healthier, more productive lives. Neurofeedback is a type of approach that uses non-invasive technology and equipment to monitor and measure brain waves in real-time. With this information, individuals can gain insight into their own brain patterns and through “brain training” develop new ways of responding to triggers and stressors while improving attention and relaxation abilities.

A comprehensive review of the existing research on the efficacy of neurofeedback found that the approach has been helpful for a variety of life challenges, such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), depression, anxiety, substance abuse and addiction, trauma symptoms and sleep disturbances. Studies also suggest that neurofeedback may also be beneficial in supporting chronic pain, sleep difficulties in individuals with PTSD, and obsessive-compuslive disorder.

Overall, the research is clear that neurofeedback is a safe and effective clinical intervention for those struggling with mental health issues, particularly ADHD and anxiety. Individuals may benefit from neurofeedback in the short-term and long-term, as the effectiveness of the intervention has been demonstrated to be lasting. It is important to note that neurofeedback should always be conducted under the care of a professional mental health practitioner, and not done as a self-treatment. Neurofeedback can be an incredible tool to help individuals gain insight into their own brain function and manage mental health challenges in ways that traditional therapies may not be able to.
